The Internet is a global system of interconnected system networks that interchanges information by packet switching using the standardized Internet Protocol Suite. Internet and World Wide Web are often used in every-day speech without much distinction. The Internet is a complex space with a rich set of useful features and functions. Most of the Internet communication is based on text, a medium with tremendous strengths, but needs help to communicate the richness possible with other mediums such as the voice, pen and body language.
The Internet Society is a onprofit organisation founded in 1992. ISOC has their offices in Washington, USA, Geneva and Switzerland. The Internet Society provides leadership in addressing issues that confront the future of the Internet. It acts not only as a global clearinghouse for Internet information and education but also as a facilitator and coordinator of Internet related initiatives around the world.
At the start of 2008, ISOC launched a set of longer term, strategic activities, called "initiatives". The initiatives which will drive ISOC's activities in 2008-2010 are:
